Scientists say virus causes severe brain damage

Scientists say a coronavirus that killed more than half a million people in Asia and Europe this year is causing severe brain dysfunction.

The research, published Wednesday in the journal Science, looked at the brains of 1,600 people infected with coronaviruses in countries such as China and the United States.

The study’s lead author, microbiologist Anil Madhav, said it was the first study to examine brain tissue from an individual infected with a different coronavire virus.

In a separate study, scientists found that people who were infected with two different coronave viruses had abnormal connections between brain cells.
