The German daily Bild reports that the deal, which was reported by the Wall Street Journal, will see Facebook and its chief rival, Twitter, merge into a single entity with an annual turnover of around $1 billion.

Axel Springer was founded in 1991 by the German media company Axel Springer-Verlag, which has been run by the family for the past three decades.

The purchase of Axel Springer by the world’s largest social media company is believed to be the most significant deal in German media history.

The deal is expected to take effect in 2020.
